Walking Through Quy Nhon’s Vietnam War History
Filmed: August 29, around 3 p.m.
Route: Nguyễn Tất Thành Boulevard to Quy Nhon Port
Quy Nhon is known as a coastal city, but during the Vietnam War it was also an area where South Korean troops were stationed and U.S. forces carried out supply operations. Nguyễn Tất Thành Boulevard, now a main street in the city center, follows the site of the former Quy Nhon Airfield runway. On my first day in Quy Nhon, I decided to walk this road and continue to the port to see what remains of those places today.
Today, Nguyễn Tất Thành Boulevard is part of everyday city life. When I reached the port, fishing boats of different sizes filled the water. Some of the larger boats, loaded with equipment, looked as though they could travel far out to sea. It was a different sight from the small fishing boats I had seen in Mui Ne.
I found no obvious military structures or wartime atmosphere along my walk. Instead, I imagined aircraft using the old airfield and supplies moving through the port. Standing beside a harbor now full of fishing boats, I spent time comparing the Quy Nhon in front of me with the Quy Nhon I imagined from its wartime history.
Quy Nhon may not be the first place to visit if you are looking for preserved Vietnam War sites. But for veterans who served here, or anyone who remembers these locations from that time, its ordinary streets and harbor today might hold a special meaning.
